Good explanation of how El Niño is not a forcing event but rather an internal perturbation over the secular trend of global warming. But it seems as if La Niña conditions prevail more often, or over longer periods, than El Niño conditions. Is this seeming imbalance true, or are the numbers/durations more nearly equal, with neutral conditions filling in the balance? Or does a succession of weak La Niña years set the stage for a strong El Niño? (like 1997-98, 2016, and maybe the current one).
that's a good and unsettled question. the canonical wisdom is that the planet will head into a permanent el nino as it warms, while others think that we might be headed for more frequent la nina conditions. this is quite an important debate and it remains to be settled.
No, don't blame oil companies. Blame politicians who refuse to pass a tax on net emissions of CO2 and methane. It is the least cost way to reduce accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere.
They have passed laws like that here, but I’ve seen reports in 60 Minutes that a blind eye is turned to the infractions--oil and natural gas producers pay off the legislators (state and federal) for their continued support.
Texas has its is. Private grids, called ERCOT, and it gets 70% of it energy from wind and solar. And it’s cheaper.
But the oil execs must xo ti us to make their $billions, and so we regular folks will suffer mightily.
Question: is the slowing down of the jet stream rotation at the pole (and resultant “topping over” of the jet stream, interacting with the Nino systems and making them different?
Fact remains it's lax firearms control that explains most killing. I agree the "gun" does not go off by itself but "constitution-addicted" Americans and criminals can't shoot people without firearms.
I must say I would far rather be run over by a driver without his motor vehicle - which is your argument.
You do know new nuclear is far more expensive than wind and solar? Perhaps not. Look it up.
You do know burning gas causes global warming? Keep reading the words of Dessler and Hausfather to learn. Be patient, seems you might need quite some time...
@croploss, your comment is on shifting the blame (from oil companies to people buying oil). Does this mean that you agree there is a cause for blame, like climate change being driven by CO2 emissions contributed by burning oil?
Maybe if the oil companies had not spent billions on propaganda, ie liars and useful idiots, to keep the money flowing humanity would have acted sooner to reduce consumption of oil.
Old Bush and Thatcher knew the score then suddenly the politicians fell over. Pushed out the proverbial window...
Very good explanation
